Train to Trivandrum
Here, I was making my last trip from college to home. I rarely do travel to home and back. So, the changes haven't grown on me and strike me when I do see them.
Well, I had just returned from college to home by the Venad Express. I had planned to come by Janashatabdhi Exp. But, somehow, I couldn't get the ticket. So, instead had to board Venad.
Though I rarely commute the EKM - TVM line, I prefer Shatabdhi. It starts off late, giving time to (a) pack up (b) return back to pick something one had forgotten and still make it to the station in time !!. I guess, more number of people have realised this utility of JS Exp.
Earlier, there was just the Venad for the after office commuters. And now, it seems both JS and Venad dont suffice. I think it is a pointer to the increasing number of people venturing into cities, like Cochin. The buying power has too increased. People are ready to shell out Rs. 31 extra and travel by JS. That is roughly 33% extra on the EKM - TVM fare.
I think it is fair to make a comment on the changing times. And during the 5 hours I spent on Venad, I was doing just that, comparing that trip with my first college bound journey, made almost half-a-decade ago.
1) The number of people who commute has increased manifold. Where, one train used to suffice, now two arenot enough.
2) People can afford more. They are ready to shell out extra bucks, if it is worth it.
3) Mobile phones. I guess, 73% is a safe figure of how many own one on that train.
4) Fares haven't increased at all. But nor has travelling time decreased. Venad still takes almost 5 hours to cover 221 kms.
On the whole, I think we can expect a change in the Railways in this zone. Electrification work is in its last stages in the EKM - TVM sector. But, the doubling work is still in its nascent stage. Maybe, five years down the lane, there would be more progress.
And thats how the tracks lay !!!
